Our clients, who are keen cooks, felt that their existing kitchen was a little dated and did not provide the best use of space. They wanted a larger, lighter, warmer and more inviting room with less nooks and crannies to gather dust or debris.
The redesign involved partial removal of load bearing walls and the widening of the rear patio door opening to allow for larger doors. Services had to be relocate to allow for gas and water on the island. We used a combination of ceramic, matt lacquer and warm walnuts along with worktops in Corian and Sensa Granite. The tinted mirrored backsplash added additional depth to the space as well as bouncing light back into the room.
We were also asked to include a utility, the design was completed such that we did not require a door to separate the utility. This kept the feeling of space and allowed natural light to travel throughout.
The use of bulkheads to hug the furniture has the effect of making the kitchen look less like a kitchen and more of a space to be lived in. A ceiling raft was installed to enable the fitting of a ceiling mounted extractor, this also allowed for some uplighting to the ceiling.
